Romantic Things to Do in Crete
Greece is easily one of the most romantic countries in the world. Its incredibly white beaches, crystal clear waters, quaint villages and dramatic sunsets make it a potentially great destination for couples. Of all the Greek islands, Crete is probably the most popular. It has everything you could possibly be looking for in a romantic getaway. Let’s take a look at your options, shall we?
First of all, it is good to know that prices in Greece are relatively low compared to other Western countries. The biggest advantage of this is that it is okay to splurge on some luxury things. You will save some money in other departments, such as food and transportation. It is absolutely allowed to spend some extra money on hotel rooms with more amenities. You could even arrange to have rose petals spread out on your bed or to have a cold bottle of champagne waiting for you. What about a private evening in the pool or spa? Imagine enjoying a glass of bubbles together in your own pool.
Crete offers many possible secluded places where you two can get away from it all. The most popular pastime in Crete is definitely spending time on a beach. This is not romantic per se, but if you find an empty beach hidden away between rocky cliffs, that would definitely change things. Luckily there are many places like that in Crete.
Examples of those beaches are Damnoni Beach, Achlia Beach, Paleochora Beach and Falassarna Beach. Some of those are facing west, which makes them ideal for watching sunsets together. If you are looking to go to those secluded beaches, taking a picnic with you is recommended for there are most likely no shops or restaurants around. This definitely adds a little romance to the experience as well. To get to these places, consider renting small motorbikes.
Romantic evening strolls can be enjoyed on cliffs or in hidden coves. After or before your walk you can also go for a romantic dinner in one of the many local restaurants or brasseries. Greek salads, lamb, wines and candlelight followed by a stroll and a sunset; could you possibly imagine a more romantic evening activity? Once the sun has set, you could also spend some time in a chair outside, snuggled up in a blanket, and watch the thousands of stars in the clear night sky.
Other, more active, things to do on a romantic holiday in Crete are watersports. The Ionian Sea is famous for its clear waters, creating excellent diving opportunities. Other suggested activities are kitesurfing or (wind) surfing. When you get tired of all this, you could of course always just spread out a large towel on the sand, relax and enjoy each other’s company. That is what you are here for in the first place, right? If you want to get out of the sun, you two can head to a tavern for a drink or a snack and do some people-watching. The towns of Rethymnon, Chania and Kissamos have nice beaches, as well as lots of shops.
If your relationship needs a bit of a pick me up in the romance department, what are you waiting for. You can get cheap flights to Crete from a number of UK cities including Glasgow, Manchester, and Birmingham.
